Beste tid å besøke

Arrive for the morning feeding slots, roughly 10 a.m. through early afternoon, when keepers are active and the big cats are most alert. Weekday mornings are noticeably calmer than crowded sunny weekends.

Budsjettips

Adult tickets run about 12 euros, with kids under 16 at half price, and the regional mobility pass gets you discounted entry. Pack a picnic instead of eating in; the lawns near the south exit are free and shaded.

Om

Raske fakta: Roughly 2,000 animals across 300 species live in a tightly packed park just minutes from the city's central riverside. Its octagonal crocodile hall, a protected landmark since the 1880s, is among the oldest surviving zoo buildings in Europe and still steams with tropical heat.

Høydepunkter: Step onto the wooden walkway inside the 1881 crocodile hall and you are wrapped in thick, humid air while basilisks and crocodiles drift in the water directly below your feet. Behind the scenes, keepers here built one of Europe's oldest coordinated breeding programs for the rare okapi, and you can sometimes catch a calf wobbling in its enclosure through floor-to-ceiling glass.

Insidertips

  • Arrive right at opening on weekends to have the most popular reptile and elephant viewing areas nearly to yourself.
  • Wear flat, comfortable shoes because the winding paths climb and drop more than you would expect.
  • Stand near the glass wall of the big-cat feeding enclosure about five minutes before the scheduled talk to grab a front-row angle.
  • Skip the main restaurant at midday and grab a snack counter bite, then eat on the shaded meadow by the south gate.
