Om
Raske fakta: Founded in 1974, this institution preserves over 2,000 works of art from the 18th century to the present day. Its collection includes everything from colonial portraits to contemporary installations, and it is especially known for having the largest collection of Jamaican folk painting in the world.
Høydepunkter: The biggest highlight is the room dedicated to the Jamaican "intuitive" art movement, featuring works by self-taught artists such as Everald Brown and Malalika Brooks. Their paintings are so raw and expressive that you will literally feel the energy of the streets of Kingston as you walk through the gallery.
Insidertips
- Do not miss the room with works by Edna Manley, the Jamaican sculptor whose work has influenced generations of artists.
- Bring a camera, photography without flash is allowed in most rooms.
- If you are in a hurry, skip the temporary exhibitions and focus on the permanent collection upstairs.
- The afternoon heat can be quite strong, so bring a bottle of water.
