Takayama Old Town Walk
Beste tid å besøke
Early morning (before 9:00) on weekdays is best to avoid tour groups crowding Sannomachi's narrow lanes. October and April are peak highlights when festival floats appear, but spring mornings offer the clearest light for photography.
Budsjettips
Wandering the streets is free; costs come from sake tastings (typically 300-500 yen), museum entries, and food stalls. The Hida Takayama tourist pass bundles bus transport and select museum entry, and the morning market offers some of the cheapest local snacks in town.

Insidertips
- Walk the back alleys off Sannomachi for quieter views of the kawara-tiled rooftops and small shrines most visitors pass by.
- Head to the Miyagawa riverbank at sunset for the classic photo of the old houses reflected in the water.
- Skip the souvenir shops on the main lane and buy hand-painted sarubobo dolls directly from the workshops on the side streets.
- Try a sake tasting flight at a brewery like Funasaka or Hirase before 11:00, when pourers have time to share stories.
