Raske fakta: One of the oldest surviving wooden structures on the Curonian Spit, this 19th-century fisherman's cottage holds over 200 authentic household items from the region's fishing communities. The museum captures a way of life where families shared their homes with livestock during harsh winters, with the barn and living quarters under one roof.
Høydepunkter: The museum's centerpiece is a massive amber-colored fireplace where fishermen once dried their nets and smoked fish, filling the entire cottage with a scent of pine and sea salt that still lingers in the old beams. Visitors can lift the actual hand-carved wooden pulleys that hauled fishing boats ashore during storms, the wood worn smooth by generations of salt-caked hands.
Insidertips
- Photography inside is allowed without flash, so leave the tripod behind for tight spaces.
- The museum shop sells locally smoked fish and small amber souvenirs at fair prices cheaper than the waterfront stalls.
- Don't skip the backyard: there's a reconstructed smokehouse and fishing boat you can walk right up to.
- Arrive when the museum opens at 10am to experience the cottage before tour boat crowds hit Nida around lunchtime.
