Raske fakta: At 1,583 meters above sea level, this is the fourth deepest lake in Poland with a maximum depth of 76 meters. Its dark, almost black waters are caused by the surrounding steep cliffs casting shadows across the surface, not by pollution or bottom sediment.
Høydepunkter: The lake sits in a glacial cirque carved by ice 10,000 years ago, with the jagged peak of Rysy towering 600 meters directly above its shoreline. On calm mornings, the water becomes a perfect mirror, reflecting the entire northern face of Poland's highest mountain with eerie precision.

- Pack a windproof jacket even in summer, the temperature at the lake can be 10 degrees colder than in Zakopane valley.
- Bring a polarizing filter for your camera to cut through surface glare and capture the lake's true dark color.
- Don't attempt the hike in regular sneakers, the trail gets rocky and slippery above Palenica Bialczanska.
- Stop at the Morskie Oko shelter first for a bathroom break and last chance to buy water before continuing upward.
