Visit on a weekday morning right when gates open at 9:30 AM to dodge the crowds that flood the palace by midday. Spring and fall offer the clearest views from the terrace, as summer haze often obscures the coastline.
Budsjettips
General admission is €14 for adults, but the Sintra Pass (€36) bundles entry to Pena, Moorish Castle, and Sintra National Palace with bus transport. Reserve tickets online in advance to skip the long ticket office queues and save €2 per ticket.

Raske fakta: Plassert 500 meter over Atlanterhavskysten, er palassets dristige karmosinrøde og sennepsgule fasader inspirert av klostergården til et kloster som en gang sto på akkurat dette stedet. Kong Ferdinand II forvandlet det ødelagte middelalderklosteret til en sommerbolig for den portugisiske kongefamilien, og blandet gotiske, mauriske og renessanseelementer til en lunefull skapelse.
Høydepunkter: Se nøye på palassets eksteriør, og du vil få øye på en stor steinsalamander som klamrer seg fast til terrassemuren, et vesen som symboliserer den alkjemiske transformasjonen av uedle metaller til gull. Palassets opprinnelige eier, kong Ferdinand II, plantet over 500 treslag fra hele verden i den omkringliggende parken, og skapte et mikroklima som fortsatt føles frodig og overjordisk i dag.
