Om

Raske fakta: The Danube carved this 100-kilometer-long gorge system over millions of years, creating Europe's most dramatic river passage. Rock walls soar up to 300 meters above the water at the narrowest point, where the river squeezes to just 150 meters wide.

Høydepunkter: Trajan's Table, a Roman memorial plaque carved directly into the cliff face, still marks the spot where Emperor Trajan's army built a 33-meter-wide road along the vertical rock wall in 100 AD. At sunset, the golden light hits the ancient inscription and the entire gorge glows amber, exactly as it did for Roman legionnaires almost two thousand years ago.

Insidertips

  • Bring binoculars to spot the Roman plaque (Trajan's Table) high on the opposite cliff face.
  • Visit on a weekday morning to have the viewpoint nearly to yourself.
  • Wear sturdy shoes with grip if you want to climb the short rocky path above the main viewing platform.
  • Pack a light jacket even in summer, as the gorge channel creates strong winds that drop temperatures significantly.
