Spring (April-June) and early autumn (September-October) offer mild temperatures and fewer crowds. The tunnels stay cool even in summer, but July-August midday heat can be intense on exposed sections.

Budsjettips

The trail itself is free. Bike rentals in Koper, Izola, or Portorož cost around 15-25 EUR per day for a standard bike, 30-40 EUR for an e-bike. Pack your own snacks and water as refreshment stops are sparse between towns.

Om

Raske fakta: Riding the Parenzana means pedaling along a 123-kilometer route that once carried steam trains between Trieste and Poreč. More than 50 tunnels and countless stone bridges dot the path, carved right into the rocky Istrian coastline.

Høydepunkter: At tunnel #52 near Grožnjan, the track emerges from total darkness onto a cliff edge overlooking the Mirna River valley 100 meters below. The stone drainage channels alongside the trail still bear the carving marks of Austro-Hungarian masons from 1902.

Insidertips

  • Rent an e-bike if you are tackling the full 123 km route; the gradient climbs steadily toward the inland sections.
  • Bring a headlamp or use your phone flashlight for the longer tunnels where daylight fades to pitch black.
  • Stop at the abandoned station at Savudrija where the original ticket window and platform signs still stand.
  • Start early from Koper around 8 AM to avoid afternoon heat and finish with a swim at the beach in Piran.
