Arrive right at 7am opening to experience the caves in soft morning light and nearly empty chambers. The interior heat builds fast after 10am, and tour buses arrive in waves between 11am and 2pm.

Raske fakta: Hule nummer 2 alene inneholder over 16 000 kvadratfot med malte Buddhabilde, nok veggmalerier til å dekke nesten fire basketballbaner. Kompleksets fem huler huser 153 Buddhastatuer pluss statuer av konger og guder, alle hugget ut av solid granittklippevegg.
Høydepunkter: En hule har en 14 meter lang liggende Buddha hugget ut av levende stein, med et skjult puterom hvor munker en gang gjemte verdifulle manuskripter. En annen huser en Buddha som er skåret ut for å se ut som han puster, med subtil brystforming som skaper en optisk illusjon når lyktenes lys flimrer over steinen.
Insidertips
- Wear covered shoes and bring socks to remove at cave entrances, the stone floors get scorching hot by midday.
- Stand at the back of cave 2 near the entrance to photograph the full row of Buddha statues with natural light framing them.
- Skip the golden Buddha statue at the base of the climb, it is a modern addition and the real treasure is 500 steps above.
- Visit on a weekday during shoulder season (April or September) when fewer tour groups fill the narrow cave pathways.
