Raske fakta: Omtrent 80 foreldreløse og skadde elefanter lever og streifer fritt rundt på den 25 mål store eiendommen ved elvebredden. Hver morgen rundt klokken 10 marsjerer flokken gjennom gatene til den nærliggende elven for sitt daglige to timer lange bad, et opptog som trekker tusenvis av besøkende.
Høydepunkter: I motsetning til dyrehager der dyr er adskilt fra mennesker med gjerder, bor mahouter (passere) sammen med spesifikke elefanter 24/7 og danner bånd som varer i flere tiår. En eldre mahout ved navn Somapala har tatt seg av den samme blinde elefanten som heter Tikiri i 35 år, og hun kjenner igjen skrittene og stemmen hans umiddelbart.

- Stand near the riverbank steps around 10am for the best view of the elephants splashing and drinking without fighting the crowd.
- Bring a change of clothes and water shoes if you want to wade into the river with the elephants, but keep a respectful 10-foot distance.
- The baby elephant feeding area gets packed by 9:30am, so arrive early and watch from the elevated platform behind the enclosure.
- Skip the souvenir shops inside the orphanage and buy from local vendors outside the gate where prices are 30-50% lower.
