Raske fakta: A giant 40-meter sextant, partially buried underground, let Ulugh Beg measure star positions with astonishing accuracy in the 1420s. His star catalog of 1,018 stars remained the most precise in the world for over 200 years, used by astronomers from Istanbul to India.
