About
Quick facts: This Orthodox church was the last Eastern Orthodox sanctuary built in the Russian Empire before World War I. Its walls also remember the signing of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk in 1918.
Highlights: During the Soviet era, an officers' club was established here, and a billiard table stood in the altar. Today, authentic late 19th-century frescoes, which have survived beneath all the layers of history, can still be seen in the sanctuary.
Insider tips
- Ask the sacristan to show you the secret basement where film projectors were kept during the Soviet era.
- The best photos are taken from the western side, when the sun illuminates the golden domes of the church.
- Wear comfortable shoes, as the stairs to the bell tower are steep and made of metal.
- The fewest visitors are on weekdays before noon.
