Best time to visit

Visit late afternoon on weekdays from May to September to catch golden light over the moat and have the park nearly to yourself. Winter visits offer thinner crowds but the surrounding grounds lose their lush greenery.

Budget tips

Entry runs about 18 BYN (roughly $7 USD) for adults, with an additional 12 BYN for a guided tour that is well worth the small upgrade. The last Wednesday of every month offers free admission, and the combined castle-plus-park ticket saves you 5 BYN over buying separately.

About

Quick facts: The castle's 34-meter tall towers served as both defense fortifications and a statement of the Radziwiłł family's immense wealth. More than 200 rooms inside were once connected by a secret underground passage system stretching over 40 kilometers.

Highlights: Look closely at the ceilings inside the Golden Hall: they are painted with a trompe-l'oeil technique that makes the flat surface appear as a massive dome rising three stories high. The frescoes were hidden under layers of plaster for decades after World War II, only rediscovered during a 1990s restoration when workers accidentally chipped through to find the original 16th-century paintings intact.

Insider tips

  • Skip the overpriced cafe inside the castle and walk 5 minutes to the restaurant on the lakefront for better food at half the price.
  • The best photo spot is from the wooden bridge across the moat at sunset, where the red brick facades reflect perfectly in the water.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes: the stone spiral staircases in the towers have over 150 uneven steps with no handrails.
  • Arrive right at opening time (10:00 AM) to tour the main halls before tour groups flood in around 11:30 AM.
