About
Quick facts: The wall paintings inside recall a unique mix of Baroque and folk motifs, which you will not find anywhere else in Belarus. During the Second World War, the Nazis used the building as a warehouse, which paradoxically helped preserve the original decoration.
Highlights: The Aron Kodesh, the holy ark on the eastern wall, retains its original painting with three domes of Jerusalem, which glows in the dim light. Locals say that if you stand in the center of the room and close your eyes, you can hear the whisper of prayers from the time when over 1,000 worshipers gathered here.
Insider tips
- Pick up the key to the synagogue in advance at the Museum of Defense of the Pruzhany Land on the other side of the street.
- The best photos of the frescoes can be taken without flash; use a tripod or brace yourself against a bench.
- Come on a weekday in the morning, when there are very few visitors and you can tour in peace.
- Notice the wooden benches by the entrance; some are from the original furnishings from the 19th century.
