Skip the fancy restaurants near the museum, they price gouge hard. Walk two streets toward the west market and you'll find proper Uyghur spots where the locals eat. One plate of laghman for like 15 yuan and it was the best I had in the province.
Hami was fine but not my favorite stop. The old town area is pretty, but everything felt a bit spread out and I had to taxi everywhere. If you're short on time in Xinjiang I'd pick elsewhere.
Came for two days, wish I'd planned four. The melons are no joke, best thing I ate all trip. Weather was hot as hell in July though, bring a hat or you'll regret it.
Honestly the night market exceeded my expectations. Grabbed a skewer from the second stall in, the lady running it barely spoke a word but the lamb was unreal. Just go with an empty stomach.
Take the slower green train from Turpan instead of the bullet one if you have the time. It drops you right in the old town and you save some money too. Also buy your melon from the roadside stalls outside the tourist zone, half the price for the same thing.
