Step into one of Aleppo's most resilient landmarks, where ancient worship survived centuries of upheaval. You'll stand under a nail-free wooden roof and see the cracked minaret that has become a symbol of the city's endurance.
Brze činjenice: Minaret leaning at a 4-degree angle from damage during the Syrian civil war. The mosque dates to the 13th century and houses a fragment believed to be from the original Kaaba curtain.
Istaknuto: Worshippers here still gather beneath a massive 500-year-old wooden ceiling held together entirely by wooden pegs, no nails at all. During Friday prayers, the imam's voice echoes through the stone courtyard just as it did seven centuries ago, carrying over the scent of orange trees planted by Ottoman governors.

Step into a living time capsule of 1920s glamour frozen in war. Wander mosaic-tiled corridors under a magnificent stained-glass ceiling that somehow survived it all.
Brze činjenice: The hotel hosted the famous British explorers T.E. Lawrence and Agatha Christie, who wrote parts of "Murder on the Orient Express" while staying there. Its striking Art Deco interior features an enormous stained-glass ceiling that survived decades of conflict largely intact.
Istaknuto: Under the grand central dome, a 1,000-square-meter stained-glass canopy casts kaleidoscopic light across the marble floors every afternoon. The hotel's once-abandoned basement hides a clandestine Cold War-era bomb shelter, complete with original ventilation shafts and faded political murals.

Few castles on Earth feel as impenetrable as this vast hilltop fortress that medieval armies simply bypassed rather than attacked. Walk through echoing stone halls, climb sun-warmed ramparts, and stand where knights once scanned the horizon for advancing forces.
Brze činjenice: With walls up to 30 meters thick in places, this fortress could withstand months-long sieges and housed a garrison of 2,000 soldiers. Its concentric defensive design, with two layers of walls forming a killing zone between them, made it nearly impossible for medieval armies to capture.
Istaknuto: Inside the castle walls, a 120-meter-long underground gallery runs beneath the southern ramparts, carved directly into the bedrock to supply water during sieges. Look for the Gothic-style chapel converted from a Muslim mosque, where Crusader knights once prayed alongside Byzantine columns scavenged from ancient Roman sites.

Best tip: cash is king here, many places don’t take cards, so always carry enough local currency to avoid hassle.
Stayed 3 days here and felt like it was just enough. The old city has a soul you won't find anywhere else, though some areas felt a bit rundown.
If you enjoy rich aromas and spices, Aleppo is a dream. The markets are lively, but be ready to bargain hard, prices can be all over the place.
The weather was perfect in spring, not too hot, great for walking tours. Meals were cheap and filling. I'd say it's worth a 4 day stay minimum.
If you're into architecture, don't miss the Umayyad Mosque. Early mornings are the best time to visit for fewer crowds and better photos.
