Brze činjenice: Više od 30 crkava i kapela uklesanih u stene okupljeno je u ovom manastirskom kompleksu urezanom u meki vulkanski tuf. Nekoliko kapela je sačuvalo žive vizantijske freske iz 11. veka, a Mračna crkva je sačuvala svoje slike zahvaljujući vekovima gotovo potpunog mraka.
Istaknuto: Mračna crkva dobila je ime zato što gotovo nema prozora, a upravo je ta večna tama razlog što su njene biblijske freske iz 11. veka preživele u tako besprekornom stanju. Jedan jedini mlaz prirodne svetlosti pogađa kupolu sa slikom Hrista Pantokratora pod pravim uglom, čineći da zlatni oreoli kao da sijaju na tamnoplavoj pozadini.

- Pay the separate entry fee for the Dark Church, its frescoes are dramatically more vivid than any other chapel here.
- Visit the Apple Church and Snake Church early in your walk before crowds cluster in the narrow corridors between chapels.
- Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, the carved stone pathways and steep stair climbs between chapels can be slippery.
- Photography inside the chapels is often restricted, but you can capture excellent exterior shots of the rock-cut facades from the upper pathway.
