More than 40,000 artifacts fill the galleries, including a segregation-era railway car and a hat belonging to civil rights icon Muhammad Ali.

- Start from the bottom and work your way up , the history galleries in the lower levels are chronological, and you'll emerge emotionally ready for the brighter culture and community exhibits above.

- Photography is allowed but flash is not; the glass-enclosed upper levels catch gorgeous natural light around mid-morning for overhead shots of the corona.
