Quick facts: Montego Bay's central square is named after Samuel Sharpe, a leader of the 1831 slave rebellion who fought for freedom. In the center of the square, a life-sized bronze sculpture of Sharpe and two other enslaved people marks the spot where he was hanged by British authorities.
Highlights: Stepping here means walking on the same ground where 20,000 enslaved people gathered on Christmas Day 1831 to plan the Jamaican Slave Revolt, the largest uprising in British Caribbean history. I discovered that the decorative chains on the square's floor are not just ornamentation: they trace the exact perimeter of the former Government House and the slave market that existed on the site.
