Odense, Denmark

Wondering about the best things to do in Odense, Denmark? Start at the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, where the fairy tale author's life unfolds across 14 rooms and a magical underground garden. Then climb the 158 steps of Odense Cathedral for city views, and wander The Funen Village's 25 historic farmsteads, breathing in 19th century rural life.

The Funen Village

Step into a living snapshot of 19th century Denmark, where costumed craftspeople actually work the land and bake bread. Wander cobblestone lanes, pet the grazing sheep, and taste rye bread still warm from the wood-fired oven.

Odense Zoo

2. Odense Zoo

4.5 (11,312)

Meet white rhinos up close and watch resident sea lions tear through training sessions. You'll stroll past majestic big cats, feed playful goats, and end your day at the massive Oceanium aquarium tunnel.

More than 1,500 animals from 100+ species call this place home, including a rare white rhino family that successfully breeds year after year. The zoo's immersive Oceanium lets visitors walk underwater through a tunnel surrounded by sharks, rays, and sea turtles.

The zoo offers a rare behind-the-scenes "Giraffe Breakfast" where you stand eye-to-eye with towering giraffes while they nibble leaves just inches from your face. Watching a 5-meter-tall giraffe extend its blue-black tongue to snatch a branch you're holding is an intimate encounter you won't forget.

Where textile factories once hummed, you now walk through four floors of Danish art history and mind-bending paper sculptures. Expect interactive light installations, a massive paper dress collection, and factory architecture turned gallery.

Housed within a former textile factory complex, the museum's collection spans 2,300 works from Danish and international artists. Its architecture blends red brick industrial heritage with modern glass walkways that let you see the old factory floors below your feet.

The museum's "Fascination of Paper" permanent exhibition holds one of Europe's largest collections of paper art, with over 3,000 pieces including paper dresses and sculptures so delicate they're only displayed in dim, UV-free light for a few weeks at a time. A narrow glass bridge suspended 12 meters above the old machine hall lets you look straight down through the building's industrial skeleton while contemporary art surrounds you.

Egeskov Castle

4. Egeskov Castle

4.6 (13,057)
Castle

Explore a real 16th-century water castle where knights once trained and legends still linger. Walk through cobblestone courtyards, climb spiral staircases to secret attic rooms, and discover old horse-drawn carriages in the loft.

Floating on a foundation of thousands of oak piles driven into the lake bed, the castle has never sunk or shifted since 1554. Its rooftop is adorned with eight towering copper spires that once served as lookout posts during times of conflict.

Above the main entrance hangs a small carved figure of the castle builder, Frans Brockenhaus, lounging with a glass of wine and a smirk: a self-portrait that mocks his own creation. The castle was saved from ruin in 1882 when a wealthy count purchased it on a whim at auction for the equivalent of a modern luxury car, then spent decades restoring it by hand.

St. Alban's Church

A 60-meter spire pulls your eye upward, but the real magic waits inside. Sunlight fractures through a modern stained glass window, scattering color across ancient stone.

The church was completed in just one year, a remarkably fast build for its size, and its spire reaches 60 meters into the Odense skyline. Inside, the altarpiece dates back to the 16th century and features intricate carved scenes that reward a close look.

Step inside on a winter afternoon and you'll catch the sun streaming through the Kaleidoscope window, a modern stained glass installation that throws fractured rainbows across the whitewashed walls. The effect is completely unexpected in a medieval space, transforming the quiet stone interior into something alive and shifting.

Odense Botanical Garden

6. Odense Botanical Garden

Step from Danish autumn straight into a steamy tropical jungle. Wander glass corridors connecting climate zones from cactus deserts to lush rainforests.

Sprawling across 4.7 hectares, this botanical garden houses over 5,000 plant species across 12 themed greenhouses. Tropical orchids bloom year-round, and the complex Victorian-era palm house soars to 16 meters in height.

Inside the 1905 palm house, a 110-year-old olive tree still produces fruit every year, completely out of place in Danish latitudes. Stand beneath its gnarled branches as condensation drips from the glass roof, and you could almost be in the Mediterranean.

Rosengårdcentret

Denmark's largest indoor shopping oasis on Funen with over 100 stores and restaurants. Browse Scandinavian fashion, grab fresh smørrebrød, and relax under the glass atrium with real palm trees.

More than 100 stores and restaurants sit under one roof, making it the largest shopping center on the island of Funen. Its distinctive colorful facade and central atrium draw over 6 million visits annually from locals and visitors alike.

Look up when you step inside the central atrium: a massive glass ceiling floods the space with natural light, while a year-round tropical palm tree oasis sits right in the middle of the food court. During December, the atrium transforms into a winter wonderland with live reindeer roaming the ground floor.

Rain caught us off guard in October. Pack layers. But the indoor markets and museums made it worthwhile anyway.

Rent a bike from the station instead of walking. The whole city is 20 min across and bike parking is free everywhere.

Mixed feelings. Cute town with lots of green space but not much nightlife. Great if you want a quiet weekend getaway.
