Thessaloníki, Greece

1. White Tower of Thessaloniki

It stands 33.9 meters tall on the coastal boulevard of Thessaloniki and has a diameter of 23 meters at its base. It was built in the 16th century as part of the fortifications and later acquired its characteristic white color in 1912.

The white paint was not always there: the Ottomans left it whitewashed after rumors that it had been used as a prison and torture site. When the city was liberated in 1912, a Greek worker painted it white symbolically, to erase its dark past.

Arch of Galerius

2. Arch of Galerius

4.7 (16,804)

In reality, the Arch of Galerius was part of a vast ceremonial complex that included the palace and the throne room. The reliefs on its surface depict the emperor's military campaigns with cinematic detail, including elephants and exotic animals he brought from the East.

Few know that the Arch was never a simple gateway: scholars believe it was part of an astronomical observatory, as its layout aligned with the sunrise at the summer solstice. Imagine standing beneath its massive dome while the morning sun rays pass exactly through the arches, just as they did 1,700 years ago.

3. Aristotelous Square

4.7 (50,330)

Aristotle Square was designed in 1918 by the French architect Ernest Hebrard, after a devastating fire that burned most of the city. It is the largest square in Thessaloniki, with a length exceeding 300 meters, and offers a unique view of the Thermaic Gulf.

Every morning around 10:00, the square fills with the intense aroma of fresh coffee and the rustling of newspapers, as locals gather at its traditional coffee shops. Few know that beneath the square lies an entire network of ancient Byzantine walls and labyrinths, which were discovered by chance during metro construction work.

4. Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki

It houses more than 300,000 exhibits covering 2,000 years of Macedonian history. Among them is the famous Gold Wreath of Vergina, an impressive golden wreath weighing 714 grams.

The most impressive exhibit is the Gold Wreath of Vergina, a finely crafted wreath made of pure gold found in the tomb of Philip II. Visitors are left speechless before the gold olive leaves that seem to sway as if real, despite the 2,300 years that have passed.

5. Byzantine Walls of Thessaloniki

4.6 (95)

They are about 8 kilometers long and include 4 kilometers that are preserved in excellent condition. Every year, thousands of visitors climb up to the walls to enjoy the panoramic view of the city and the Thermaic Gulf.

At the northeastern end of the walls, the Eptapyrgio (Yedi Kule) operated as a prison for over 100 years, until 1989. Its walls still bear carved names and messages from prisoners, creating a chilling contrast between fortress architecture and human history.

6. Ladadika District

4.8 (118)

The Ladadika district got its name from the olive presses and oil shops that dominated the area in the 19th century. Today, this neighborhood of more than 40 restored buildings is the most vibrant gastronomic and nightlife corner of the city.

Few people know that Ladadika survived the 1917 fire that destroyed the city center, thanks to its network of narrow cobblestone streets that acted as a natural barrier. Walking among the brick buildings, you will feel the atmosphere of old Thessaloniki come alive through the smell of grilled meat and the music pouring out from every corner.

Thessaloniki is way more chill than Athens but still has great food. The waterfront area at sunset is gorgeous. 3 days felt about right for us.

Loved the food scene here. Bougatsa for breakfast changed my life. Only complaint was the stray dogs everywhere, made me nervous walking at night.

Skip the fancy restaurants along Nikis Avenue. Walk into the side streets near Athonos Square for souvlaki at half the price and double the flavor. Locals eat there.

Honestly found it a bit meh compared to other Greek cities. The city beach is not great and the traffic is chaotic. Would skip if you have limited time in Greece.
