Plan language:

Stretching nearly a kilometer along Altea's coastline, this pebble beach is backed by a striking promenade of black-and-white patterned tiles. Its unusual mix of smooth grey stones and crystal-clear waters makes the Mediterranean feel extra turquoise here, especially on sunny afternoons.
On summer evenings, locals gather on the pebbles with towels and wine as the sun melts behind the Sierra Bernia mountains, creating a communal sunset ritual that's been happening for decades. The sound of the sea washing over the round stones makes a distinctive rolling clatter you won't hear on sandy beaches, like nature's own percussion.

Up to 80,000 visitors climb its 719 steps each year with no elevators available. The distinctive blue and white dome visible from miles away is covered in 44,000 ceramic tiles handmade by local artisans.
During summer solstice, a narrow beam of sunlight passes through a small opening in the dome and lands precisely on a specific mosaic tile near the altar, a phenomenon the builders incorporated intentionally. Locals still gather on rooftops during the Moros y Cristianos festival to watch fireworks reflect off the glazed tiles, turning the entire dome into a kaleidoscope.

This pebbly shoreline sits right where the Sierra de Bernia mountains tumble into the Mediterranean, creating a dramatic contrast of grey stones against turquoise water. Unlike the sandy beaches nearby, the smooth pebbles here make the water crystal clear with no sediment stirring up, even on windy days.
At the western end of the beach, a natural spring seeps through the rocks, creating a small freshwater pool that mixes with the sea at high tide. Locals know to scoop handfuls of the smooth cap negret pebbles, which were historically used as ballast for trading ships heading to North Africa.

A mountaintop fortress with jaw-dropping 360-degree views of turquoise reservoirs and snowy peaks. Climb the original stone steps, peer through medieval arrow slits, and discover an art gallery inside the walls.
Perched on a rocky spur 595 meters above sea level, this fortress commands views stretching to the Mediterranean Sea on clear days. The castle was built over a natural cave system that later served as an ice store, supplying ice to the region long before refrigeration existed.
Wander through the Espai d'Art Contemporani, a contemporary art gallery tucked inside the castle's ancient walls where modern sculptures sit against 1,000-year-old stone. In one corner of the fortress, a tiny 18th-century prison still has its original iron bars and graffiti carved by inmates using only their fingernails.

A real working market where Altea's fishermen and farmers sell directly to locals, not tourists. Watch the morning auction of silver anchovies, then eat freshly grilled octopus at a counter shared with strangers.
Fresh fish arrives daily from the nearby port of Campomanes, with catches still glistening and smelling of the sea. Over 20 family-run stalls have operated here for decades, with some vendors representing third-generation fishmongers and greengrocers.
Step up to the tiny seafood bar tucked in the back corner, where the owner shucks oysters to order while pouring ice-cold local white wine. Only locals know to arrive before noon to snag one of the four stools and watch the daily parade of grandmothers bargaining for the best catch.

Altea is beautiful but honestly after 2 days I was a bit bored. Not much nightlife and things close early. Depends what you want.
If you're driving, park at the big lot at the bottom of the hill. Don't try to drive up into the old town, streets are insanely narrow.
Way too many tourists in July. Could barely walk through the old town. I bet spring or fall is way better.
Skip the restaurants right on the main promenade. Walk up into the old town streets, cheaper and way better food.
Spent 4 days in Altea and honestly could have stayed a week. The old town is pure magic, whitewashed streets and flowers everywhere.
