Fakte të shpejta: Some 829 handprints cover the cave walls, with 9 out of 10 being left hands. The rock art spans nearly 10,000 years, with the oldest layers dating back to around 9,000 BCE.
Pikat kryesore: Nearly 800 of the 829 stenciled hands are left hands, suggesting the artists held a blowpipe made of bone or hollow reed in their right hand while spraying pigment with their mouths. The red pigment still visible after 10,000 years came from hematite mixed with guanaco fat, and the artists blew the color through a pipe rather than painting it directly.
Këshilla të brendshme
- Bring sturdy hiking shoes and a windbreaker: the Patagonian wind whips through the canyon year-round and the path involves uneven terrain.
- Request guide Carlos if available, he has spent 15 years studying the site and points out details most guides skip.
- The afternoon light between 2-4 PM creates the best contrast to photograph the hand stencils on the orange canyon walls.
- Skip the visitor center gift shop and instead walk the extra 200 meters past the main cave to see the less-visited hunting scene panels.
