Late April to early May for the apricot blossom festival when the valley turns white and pink. Early autumn (September-October) offers harvest season with wine tastings at nearly every village along the path.

The trail itself is free to walk. Pack a picnic from local markets in Spitz or Weissenkirchen instead of paying for tourist restaurants. The Wachau Card (€39) covers train and bus transport along the route plus discounts on wine tastings.

Wear sturdy hiking shoes, the stone terraces get slippery after rain and some sections involve 200 stone steps carved into hillsides.
Stop at a Heuriger (wine tavern) around 4 PM when local winemakers open their doors for fresh young wine and cold platters.
Skip the busy Melk Abbey main hours and visit the trail section between Weissenkirchen and Dürnstein instead for the most dramatic cliffside views.
