Start before 5 AM to catch the sunrise above the cloud layer, when the valley below looks like a sea of white and the volcano silhouette glows orange. The dry months from May to September offer the clearest visibility and firmest trail conditions.

Wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip, as volcanic scree sections get slick even when the weather looks dry.
Take the left fork at the second junction; most groups head right and miss the quieter ridge with better photo angles of the crater.
Bring a windbreaker even in the dry season, temperatures at the top can drop to 15°C while the base stays warm.
Skip the weekend rush and hike on a Tuesday or Wednesday when the trail sees less than a third of the weekend traffic.
