Sur, Oman kõige populaarsemad atraktsioonid

When looking for the best things to do in Sur, Oman, start at the Sur Maritime Museum, which showcases 400 years of maritime history. Then visit the Al Ayjah Fortress, standing opposite the old town, and the Dhow Shipyard, where local craftsmen still build traditional wooden boats by hand.

Sur Maritime Museum

1. Sur Maritime Museum

4.3 (146)
MuuseumHuvipunktAsutus

The only place in Oman where legendary Arabian sailing ships are still born. Here you will see masters building ships by hand without any blueprints, ships that sailed the seas back in the Middle Ages.

Kiired faktid: Siin hoitakse üle 100 aasta vanust puulaevade ehitamise traditsiooni, mille UNESCO on tunnistanud vaimseks kultuuripärandiks.

2. Al Ayjah Fort

4.1 (314)
CastleAjalooline paikHuvipunktAsutus

The only fortress in Oman whose tower also served as a windmill. Climb the walls, feel the gusts of wind from the sea and see how the old walls still guard the city gates.

Kiired faktid: The tower rising above the gate was used not only for defense but also as a windmill for grinding grain. The fortress walls are located just a few meters from the water, and during low tide you can see crabs sunbathing on the rocks around it.

Esiletõstmised: In the inner courtyard of the fortress, original clay cannonballs still stand, stacked in piles since the 18th century. They were never used; the defensive strategy relied not on firepower but on the layout of the walls so that the enemy would get stuck in narrow passages.

Dhow Shipyard of Sur

3. Dhow Shipyard of Sur

4.2 (1,005)
MuuseumHuvipunktAsutus

One of the last places in the world where traditional wooden ships are built by hand. You will hear the rhythm of hammers, smell the scent of wood and see how sea legends are born.

Kiired faktid: Sadu aastaid maastiku osaks olnud laevaehituse dokid töötavad endiselt traditsiooniliste meetoditega. Kohalikud meistrid ehitavad dhow-laevu käsitsi ilma igasuguste joonisteta, tuginedes vaid põlvest põlve edasi antud teadmistele.

Esiletõstmised: Erinevalt paljudest maailma paikadest ehitatakse siin laevu ilma igasuguse metallkarkassita, ainult puitlaudade köitega ühendamise tehnikaga. Protsess kestab 9 kuust kuni 2 aastani ja iga laev võib vedada kuni 200 tonni lasti, kuigi selles pole ainsatki naela.

Al Ayjah Watchtower

4. Al Ayjah Watchtower

4.5 (470)
Ajalooline maamärkAjalooline paikHuvipunktAsutus

The only place in Oman where the 18th century gate control mechanism still works. You will see living history as guards announce the opening and closing of the gates with a trumpet.

Kiired faktid: Selle torni seintel on endiselt näha Hollandi kahurikuulide jälgi 19. sajandi merelahingutest.

Sunaysilah Fort

5. Sunaysilah Fort

4.1 (368)
CastleAjalooline paikHuvipunktAsutus

The only round fortress in Oman offers incredible panoramic views and centuries of history. Discover secret tunnels, try the narrow stairs and feel like a true sultan.

Bilad Sur Castle

6. Bilad Sur Castle

4.1 (450)
CastleTurismiobjektAjalooline paikHuvipunktAsutus

The only fortress in Oman rising at the meeting point of desert and ocean. Climb the narrow stairs to the top and see a breathtaking panorama from the tower to the endless sand dunes.

Kindluse müüridel on endiselt näha iidsed kirjutised, mille jätsid portugali meremehed 400 aastat tagasi.

Sur Corniche

7. Sur Corniche

4.6 (5,529)
TurismiobjektHuvipunktAsutus

The only place in Oman where a seaside promenade leads past working sailing shipyards. Here the scent of sea salt mixes with the aroma of wood shavings and the bustle of the fish market.

Kiired faktid: This promenade stretches along one of the longest natural bays in Oman. It connects the old city port with the traditional boat-building districts.

Esiletõstmised: Here, at the edge of the pier, you can still see craftsmen hand-stitching traditional Omani sailing vessels called dhows. Each such ship is built without any blueprints, relying solely on centuries of experience passed down through memory.

Al Kamil Fort

8. Al Kamil Fort

4.1 (368)
CastleAjalooline paikHuvipunktAsutus

Here you will feel the authentic spirit of Omani walls without tourist crowds. Climbing the steep stairs to the top, you will see the surrounding palm groves and the old city from a bird's eye view.

Kiired faktid: Al Kamil Fort stands out for its square structure and massive wooden gates, which recall the times when Oman's trade routes were defended here. The fortress retains its original shaft well and several rooms where soldiers lived with their families.

Esiletõstmised: Though it looks modest from the outside, inside hides a well 12 meters deep, carved directly into the rock. Imagine a hot Omani afternoon and the cool wind blowing through the openings in the fortress walls, while in the courtyard stands an ancient traditional aflaj-type irrigation wheel.

Sur Beach

9. Sur Beach

4.3 (407)
TurismiobjektHuvipunktAsutus

Here you will see turtles tumbling across the sand into the ocean and plankton glowing at night. You will remember the sunset colors over the Arabian Sea and the silence broken only by the rustle of the waves.

Kiired faktid: Just an hour's drive from the city center stretches nearly 15 kilometers of endless sand. Here you can watch turtles crawl out of the ocean to lay eggs, which several hundred females do every year.

Esiletõstmised: From June to August, you can see bioluminescent plankton here, which glows blue-green as the waves crash onto the shore. It is one of the few places in the world where this natural phenomenon is so bright and easily visible to the naked eye.

Wadi Shab

10. Wadi Shab

4.6 (5,977)
TurismiobjektHuvipunktAsutus

One of the most beautiful valleys in Oman, where water flows through rocks straight into the sea. Hike, swim and dive into a mysterious cave with a crystal lake.

Kiired faktid: Sügaval kivises kanjonis peidus olev veetee viib koopani, kus on kristallselge järv, milles saab ujuda.

The frankincense shop near the sea fort had the best quality I found in all of Oman. Way cheaper than the Muscat souq and the owner let me sample each grade.

Sur is way more relaxed than Muscat, the vibe along the creek at sunset is unreal. Three days felt perfect to see the dhow yards and just wander.

Honestly found Sur a bit sleepy for my taste. The beach was nice but not much nightlife. Good for a quiet stopover but I wouldn't stay more than a night.

Food wise, skip the tourist cafes near the corniche. Walk into the old souq area, small bakeries there have fresh kuboos and karak for almost nothing.

If you rent a car, drive out to Ras Al Jinz for the turtle nesting at dawn. Go with a local guide from the visitor center, the group tours miss half the details.
