Franciscan Monastery of St. Anthony

Visit in the morning during spring (April to June) or autumn (September to October). The underground grotto and stained glass windows look best when light is abundant. Christmas decorations are at their most splendid, but there are also more visitors during that time.
Conseils budget
Free admission, donations welcome. You can have a deep experience with zero budget, but it is recommended to bring some small change for the donation box to support monastery maintenance.

À propos
Faits rapides: This Franciscan monastery houses the world's largest collection of nativity scene models, with over 600 pieces. The monastery also features a miniature replica of the "Golden Gate," inspired by the famous bronze doors of the Florence Baptistery of San Giovanni.
Points forts: In the monastery's underground crypt lies a grotto handcrafted from 500,000 natural stones, recreating the appearance of the Bethlehem manger. Each stone comes from a different country, said to have been brought by pilgrims carrying soil and rocks from their own homelands.
Conseils d'initiés
- Wear comfortable shoes. The stone floor in the underground grotto is uneven, but it is worth taking your time to explore slowly.
- Pick up a free multilingual guide booklet at the entrance. It is more efficient than looking things up on your phone.
- Do not rush off. The olive trees and rose garden in the courtyard are perfect for sitting quietly for a moment, almost undisturbed.
- Photography is allowed, but the underground grotto is quite dark. It is recommended to bring a camera with a large aperture or use your phone's night mode.
