The chairlift costs about 12,000 CLP round trip (roughly US$13), while driving to the foot of the volcano and exploring the base is free with your own car. Morning lift tickets run cheaper than afternoons, and several Puerto Varas tour operators bundle the volcano with the lakeside city for less than booking separately.

Faits rapides: Le cône de 2 652 mètres s'élève directement depuis le rivage du lac, une symétrie si parfaite qu'elle a servi de doublure au mont Fuji lors de tournages de films et d'émissions. Ses glaciers coulent encore le long de ses flancs aujourd'hui, mais la dernière éruption remonte à aussi récemment que 1869.
Points forts: Les matins où le lac est d'un calme miroir, tout le cône recouvert de neige se reflète à l'envers dans l'eau, et au crépuscule le glacier se teinte de rose saumon avant que le ciel ne s'estompe. Un téléphérique rouge et blanc grinçant transporte les skieurs sur la pente depuis 1936, ce qui en fait l'un des plus anciens remontées d'Amérique du Sud encore en service.

- Pack at least three layers even in January, the wind at the upper station feels like winter at 2,000-plus meters.
- Shoot from the lake beaches below at golden hour, that is when the glacier glows orange and the reflection is sharpest.
- Skip the guided add-ons, the base area has a simple cafeteria and the same panorama comes free from the parking lot.
- Get to the gate before 10 a.m. to beat tour buses and catch an empty, glassy lake for photos.
