Entry costs around 3,000 Chilean pesos for foreigners, about 30 kronor, and is paid in cash at the small gatehouse. Skip the expensive guided tour and drive yourself instead; with an early start you'll get ahead of most visitors and avoid the crowds.

Faits rapides: L'eau contient près de dix fois la salinité de la mer, et pourtant elle grouille de vie sur les fonds peu profonds. Ici, à 2 300 mètres d'altitude, au cœur du troisième plus grand champ de sel du monde, jusqu'à 40 000 flamants de trois espèces se rassemblent au plus fort de la saison.
Points forts: Une seule volée rose se fait rose en mangeant : la couleur des flamants vient des petites crevettes Artemia salina qui pullulent dans la saumure, et plus il y a de proies, plus le plumage est éclatant. Marche sur la croûte quand le vent faiblit et écoute chaque pas crisser comme du verre brisé tandis que les lagons, lisses comme des miroirs, doublent les montagnes.
Conseils d'initiés
- Put on your sunglasses already at the entrance, the salt reflections are blinding between ten and four.
- Aim for weekdays before eight o'clock, then you'll have almost the whole place to yourself.
- Walk to the far end of the boardwalk and sit still for ten minutes, then the flamingos will dare to come close.
- Bring a windbreaker, cold gusts blow in from the Andes even in the middle of summer.
