Faits rapides: Environ 15 constructions en pierre sont dispersées sur une hauteur rocheuse, une forteresse érigée par le peuple atacameño au Moyen Âge. Une bataille sanglante en 1540 poussa les défenseurs à abandonner la hauteur, et les restes du mur sont toujours debout aujourd'hui.
Points forts: Une seule étroite ouverture dans le mur servait de porte, une défense si efficace que quelques-uns pouvaient tenir toute une armée à distance. En haut de la crête, à un peu plus de 100 mètres au-dessus de la rivière, tu embrasses d'un seul regard toute la vallée et le volcan Licancabur, haut de 5 916 mètres.

- Bring at least one liter of water and sturdy shoes, the last stretch is steep and rocky.
- Come for sunset for golden light over the valley, but allow time to get back down before darkness falls.
- Take the opportunity to photograph the volcano from the upper terraces, where you get the whole mountain range in the frame.
- Skip the guided tours if you are an experienced hiker, the trail is easy to find on your own.
