Faits rapides: The Riessersee sits at 734 meters above sea level, less than a 10-minute walk from the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Olympic ski jump. Fishermen have been casting lines here since the 15th century, and the lake's crystal-clear waters are fed entirely by underground springs.

Points forts: On a calm early morning, the surface of the Riessersee turns into a perfect mirror reflecting the entire Zugspitze massif upside down, a sight that lasts only until the first breeze ripples across the water. Locals know to arrive before 8 a.m. to catch this fleeting reflection, often spotting deer drinking from the opposite shore while mist hovers just above the lake.

Conseils d'initiés

• Skip the full loop on a windy day, the reflection is ruined and the far side offers little shelter.
• Park at the Olympia Skistadion parking lot (free) and take the short marked path that starts behind the ski jump's landing area.
• Bring binoculars: the opposite shore is a regular drinking spot for roe deer and occasionally red foxes around sunrise.
• Wear waterproof shoes if visiting after rain, the northern section of the trail can get muddy and stays shaded well into the morning.
