Faits rapides: Dédié au seigneur Shiva, ce temple se trouve sur les rives des backwaters de Kavvayi, dans le nord du Kerala. La divinité principale est un lingam de Shiva auto-manifesté (Swayambhu), que les habitants pensent avoir été découvert par un agriculteur labourant son champ il y a des siècles.
Points forts: Contrairement à la plupart des temples du Kerala avec leurs imposants gopurams, le sanctuaire est ici une petite structure au plafond bas où l'on doit se baisser pour entrer, créant un contact intime avec la divinité. Lors du festival annuel Kalasham, les bassins du temple sont illuminés de plus de 10 000 lampes à huile à la fois, leurs reflets ondulant sur l'eau noire tandis que les prêtres psalmodient d'anciens hymnes védiques.

- Visit during the Malayalam month of Kumbham (Feb-March) to witness the spectacular 10,000-lamp Kalasham festival.
- Wear traditional attire like mundu for men and saree or salwar for women, or at least cover shoulders and knees.
- The best photographs come from the backwater-facing side of the temple during golden hour, not from the main entrance.
- Arrive before 8 AM to avoid the crowds that start gathering after the morning rush of pujas.
