Faits rapides: Roughly 150 shops and offices stacked across six terraced levels once hummed with commerce in what many call the world's oldest shopping mall. The complex housed an ancient Roman market where traders sold everything from olive oil and wine to spices and fabrics.
Points forts: The semicircular sweep of the Great Hall survives with its original brick arches and barrel-vaulted ceilings, letting you stand exactly where Roman shoppers bargained 1,900 years ago. Walk past the remains of a Taberna, a Roman shop counter still intact, and imagine the clatter of amphorae and shouted prices echoing through the corridor.

- Ask at the ticket desk if the upper terraces are open, they sometimes close for conservation and those views are worth the climb.

- Head to the lower level exit near Via dei Fori Imperiali for a dramatic upward photo of the brick arches framing the sky.
