Faits rapides: L'eau contient jusqu'à 30 pour cent de sel, une concentration si extrême qu'elle est localement extraite pour produire de la soude industrielle. À chaque saison des pluies, le lac prend une teinte rosée à cause des millions de flamants roses qui viennent se nourrir des algues.
Points forts: Sous la croûte se cache un monde vivant : les bactéries colorent les plaines d'un rose vif et d'un rouge carmin, tandis que le seul poisson survivant se dissimule dans les courants des sources chaudes environnantes. Par un matin silencieux, le sel crépite et claque sous vos pieds tandis que des bulles de CO2 remontent des profondeurs.

- Wear a hat, sunglasses, and sturdy shoes, because the white soda flats reflect the sun harshly and become bone-dry and brittle.
- Go before sunrise or at sunset to the southern section where the flamingos gather for the best photos and the most beautiful light.
- Do not venture too far onto the lake, the crust can be deceptively thin and you may sink unnoticed into the mud beneath.
- Do not skip the nearby hot springs at Little Magadi, where you can safely wade in the warm water.
