Faits rapides: Quatre arches massives en pierre s'élèvent à 11 mètres de haut, sculptées dans du granit rose transporté depuis 40 kilomètres. Le monument commémore la bataille de Junín de 1824, l'un des derniers conflits de la guerre d'indépendance du Pérou contre l'Espagne.
Points forts: Contrairement aux monuments plus clinquants d'autres villes andines, celui-ci est fait de blocs de granit rose colossal qui brillent en orange brûlé au coucher du soleil. Les habitants s'y rassemblent chaque soir pour des stands de nourriture de rue improvisés et des parties de dominos, en faisant un espace communautaire vivant plutôt qu'un monument statique.

- Come around 5 PM to catch the sunset light hitting the granite blocks and turning them a deep orange.
- Bring small coins to buy anticuchos (grilled beef heart skewers) from the vendors who set up nearby in the evening.
- Skip going inside the archway itself during midday the sun is harsh and the shadows offer no relief.
- Combine this with a walk through the nearby Plaza de Armas, just 5 minutes on foot.
