Faits rapides: Les ruelles étroites de Berbera gardent la mémoire de l'époque où le port était la principale porte d'entrée de la Somalie pour le commerce avec l'Arabie et l'Inde. Les maisons en pierre locales, avec leurs portes en bois sculpté, se souviennent des pas des marchands qui arrivaient ici sur des boutres à travers le golfe d'Aden.
Points forts: Dans la vieille ville subsistent des bains ottomans uniques, les hammams, vieux de plus de 150 ans, où l'on peut encore ressentir la chaleur d'un véritable four en pierre. Depuis le toit d'une des villas marchandes en ruine, la vue donne sur un labyrinthe de ruelles où les garçons jouent au ballon entre des murs vieux de 400 ans.
Conseils d'initiés
- Wear closed-toe shoes. Goats and trash roam among the stones, and sandals will not protect you from dust and sharp edges.
- Take photos of the carved wooden doors on Sheikh Mahmud Street. These are the oldest and most richly decorated examples in the city.
- Skip the main mosque interior if you are not a Muslim. You will not be let in anyway, but the facade with its 19th century minaret is worth examining.
- Agree on the price with local guides before the tour starts, not after. The usual rate is 3-5 dollars per hour.
