Faits rapides: Les Romains ont construit cette arène vers 200 apr. J.-C. pour organiser des combats de gladiateurs et des chasses aux animaux. Les gladiateurs se battaient et saignaient ici tandis que jusqu'à 14 000 spectateurs acclamaient depuis des gradins en pierre surplombant la mer Méditerranée.
Points forts: Après la fin de l'ère des gladiateurs, des chrétiens furent exécutés ici, et plus tard une église médiévale fut construite directement dans les murs en pierre de l'arène. On peut encore voir les contours effacés des fondations de l'église pressées contre la maçonnerie romaine, une rare histoire stratifiée en un seul cadre.
