Faits rapides: Les ouvriers médiévaux ont sculpté des sièges de miséricorde sous les stalles du chœur avec des scènes malicieuses de renards prêchant et de dragons combattant. Le plafond aux anges du XVe siècle de la cathédrale a survécu au Blitz de Manchester en 1940 alors qu'une grande partie de la ville environnante brûlait.

Points forts: Regardez sous les stalles du chœur et vous apercevrez les « Manchester Misericords », un ensemble de 30 sièges en bois sculptés datant des années 1500, avec des scènes cachées grossières et ridicules en dessous. L'une montre une femme battant son mari avec une quenouille, une autre présente un renard déguisé en moine prêchant à des oies, vous offrant un aperçu de l'humour médiéval qui fonctionne encore aujourd'hui.

Conseils d'initiés

• Wear comfortable shoes and combine your visit with a walk along the nearby River Irwell or through the medieval Shambles Square right outside.
• Skip the gift shop and head straight for the choir stalls to flip up the seats and examine the misericord carvings up close.
• Photography is allowed without flash, and the best shot is from the far end of the nave looking toward the altar with the angel roof overhead.
• Arrive before 10am on weekdays to have the nave nearly to yourself before school groups and tour buses arrive.
