Faits rapides: La forteresse s'élève à 20 mètres de haut avec des murs en terre battue, couvrant environ 4 hectares du centre de Boukhara. Après que les forces russes eurent bombardé la citadelle en 1920, seulement environ 20 pour cent des structures d'origine ont survécu.
Points forts: La place du Registan, directement devant la forteresse, accueillait autrefois des exécutions publiques chaque vendredi, les condamnés étant jetés depuis la rampe de la porte surélevée. Un fait méconnu: le dernier émir s'est échappé par un tunnel souterrain secret lorsque l'Armée rouge a percé les murs en 1920, abandonnant son harem et son trésor.

- Skip the guided tour and pick up the 10,000 som map at the entrance instead, it covers the same information at your own pace.
- Climb to the top of the gate ramp for the best view of the Registan square and the city skyline.
- Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes because the packed earth paths and uneven staircases inside the fortress are dusty and slippery.
- Visit the small throne room on the right after entering the main gate, it has the most intact original ceiling paintings from the 19th century.
