Faits rapides: Ici, l'astronome Ulugh Beg mesurait les positions des étoiles avec un sextant dont le rayon atteignait 40 mètres. Son catalogue d'étoiles du XVe siècle était si précis qu'il fut utilisé par les astronomes occidentaux plusieurs centaines d'années plus tard.
Points forts: Le sextant géant ne se trouve pas au-dessus du sol mais est creusé profondément dans la crevasse de terre, de sorte qu'il ne reste qu'un arc de marbre qui dépasse. Sur sa voûte de 40 mètres de long, Ulugh Beg mesurait les positions du soleil et des planètes avec une précision qu'il fallut deux siècles aux Européens pour égaler.

- First go down into the excavation tunnel and look up along the marble arc to really grasp the size.
- The museum next door shows Ulugh Beg's original manuscripts and astronomical instruments, do not miss it.
- Visit on a weekday in the middle of the day to avoid the tourist groups that usually arrive between 10 and 11.
- Combine with a walk to Ulugh Beg's observatory hill for a view over all of Samarkand.
