Faits rapides: Un énorme sextant de 40 mètres, partiellement enterré, permit à Oulough Beg de mesurer les positions des étoiles avec une précision étonnante dans les années 1420. Son catalogue d'étoiles de 1 018 astres resta le plus précis du monde pendant plus de 200 ans, utilisé par les astronomes d'Istanbul à l'Inde.
Points forts: L'instrument principal de l'observatoire était un arc méridien colossal taillé dans une tranchée dans le flanc de la colline, bordé de marbre et marqué de graduations précises. Les astronomes grimpaient à l'intérieur de ce tunnel de pierre pour suivre les corps célestes, n'utilisant que leurs yeux et la géométrie silencieuse de l'arc au-dessus d'eux.
