Mount Misen
Best time to visit
Early morning on clear days avoids crowds and gives calm, unobstructed views. Late autumn offers the best foliage and dramatic sunset colors.
Budget tips
No general entrance fee, hiking to the summit is free. The ropeway requires a paid fare so buy a round-trip ticket to save money, and use the JR Pass to cover the ferry from Miyajimaguchi to Miyajima.

About
Fakta singkat: Tucked among ancient cedars, the summit rewards hikers with a 360-degree panorama of dozens of tiny islands and ribbon-like waterways. Steep trails climb about 535 meters, and curious wild macaques sometimes watch from shaded rocks while pine-scented breezes carry a faint salt tang.
Sorotan: A tiny mountaintop hall keeps an 'eternal flame' that tradition credits to the monk Kūkai in 806, and a spark from that fire was used to light a peace memorial flame in 1964. Pressing close, you can feel the warm air and smell incense as bronze smoke curls around weathered wooden statues that pilgrims still touch for luck.
Insider tips
- Wear sturdy shoes and layers, summit weather is cooler and windier than the coast.
- Start the hike from Momijidani Park early to avoid afternoon crowds and catch soft morning light.
- Photograph the Seto Inland Sea from the summit observatory at sunrise or sunset for best light and contrast.
- Avoid peak ropeway queues by hiking up and riding down, or buy ropeway tickets in the morning when lines are shorter.
