Fakta cepat: More than 30 rock-cut churches and chapels cluster within this monastic complex carved into soft volcanic tuff. Several chapels retain vivid 11th-century Byzantine frescoes, with the Dark Church preserving its paintings through centuries of near-total darkness.
Sorotan: The Dark Church earned its name because it has almost no windows, and that perpetual gloom is exactly why its 11th-century biblical frescoes survived in such pristine condition. A single shaft of natural light hits the dome painting of Christ Pantocrator at just the right angle, making the golden halos seem to glow against the deep blue background.

- Visit the Apple Church and Snake Church early in your walk before crowds cluster in the narrow corridors between chapels.
