Fatti rapidi: Con una superficie di 15,2 km² è il più grande lago alpino artificiale della Germania. Ogni inverno viene svuotato e in primavera viene nuovamente riempito, rivelando sul fondale la via danubiana e i resti di strade romane.

Punti salienti: Quando l'acqua si abbassa in inverno, riemerge un ponte romano sommerso da tempo e le fondamenta medievali, come se per quattro mesi tornasse un mondo perduto da secoli. Ogni primavera si osserva il livello dell'acqua salire di 2 metri al giorno mentre inghiotte la vecchia strada e i prati, finché il lago non raggiunge di nuovo il suo aspetto estivo.

Instead of the overcrowded viewpoint near Neuschwanstein, go to the southern shore near the village of Steinbach. From there you have the castles in perfect symmetry without the crowds.
You can best enjoy the water from a paddleboard or kayak rented at the Füssen harbor, where there is also a free beach.
If you come in October, you will see the dramatic draining of the lake and exposed historical pathways.
The cycling path around the lake is 25 km long and you can find a bike rental right at the harbor.
