Best time to visit

Early morning or late afternoon in spring and autumn, when light is warm and crowds are smaller; avoid midday in summer when heat and visitor numbers peak.

Budget tips

Entry is included with the timed Colosseum+Forum+Palatine ticket, normally around €18; first Sunday of the month grants free entry to state sites, and the Roma Pass or Omnia Card also cover admission, so book timed slots online to avoid queues.

About

Fatti rapidi: Ancient ruins buzz with stories of political intrigue and social drama as you walk through open-air temples and market places once central to Roman public life. The air carries whispers of orators and emperors, making each stone a silent witness to the empire's rise and fall.

Punti salienti: Imagine walking where Julius Caesar once strode, surrounded by ruins over 2,000 years old, including the Curia Julia where senators debated laws; you can almost hear whispers of ancient politics in the air. The site was once a bustling marketplace and center of daily Roman life, where over 50 temples, basilicas, and public spaces stood, each engraved with stories carved in stone and echoes of roaring crowds during grand events.

Insider tips

  • Wear sturdy shoes, surfaces are uneven and many paths have steps with no handrails.
  • Start at the Palatine Hill for clearer panoramas of the Forum with softer morning light.
  • Buy a combined Colosseum+Forum+Palatine timed ticket in advance to skip the ticket lines and secure entry times.
  • Bring a refillable water bottle and sun protection, shade is limited among the ruins.

Morning visit with kids, lines short and stroller friendly. Paid extra for the underground tour and it was the highlight, though signage was unclear.

Visited at noon, busy but manageable. The Forum ruins are stunning, skip the audio guide and save 6 EUR, guided walk was better.
