Best time to visit

Arrive at opening on weekday mornings to beat the longest security queues and enjoy softer interior light; late afternoon is quieter in shoulder seasons.

Budget tips

Main basilica entry is free, but there is a paid ticket to climb the dome and a separate reservation-only fee for the Scavi (Vatican Necropolis); book dome or Scavi tickets online in advance to avoid long waits, and know that Vatican Museum passes do not cover basilica interior or Scavi.

About

Fatti rapidi: Stepping inside, visitors are overwhelmed by the sheer scale and intricate artistry that seem to touch the heavens. The immense dome, which has a breathtaking view of the city, was engineered with such precision that its shadow perfectly marks the day and hour on the basilica's floor.

Punti salienti: Michelangelo designed the massive dome, which stands nearly 136 meters tall, and the acoustics inside are so precise that a single whisper by the altar can be heard across the vast nave. Beneath the basilica lies the necropolis where St. Peter is believed to be buried, and you can actually see ancient Roman tombs just a few meters below your feet, a striking contrast to the Renaissance art above.

Insider tips

  • Dress respectfully, cover shoulders and knees, and carry a lightweight scarf for quick coverage at security if needed.
  • Arrive 30–45 minutes before opening to get ahead of the main security line and enjoy clearer views of the nave.
  • Climb the dome first if you want fewer people in photos, take the stairs for better vantage points and cheaper fare, or the lift for part of the way if you have mobility limits.
  • Skip Scavi unless you booked well in advance, and photograph the nave from the central aisle and the dome base for classic wide-angle shots.

Came after lunch, huge crowds and a 45 minute security wait. Paid for the guided tour which focused the visit and was worth the extra money. 4/5

Went late afternoon and missed the dome climb, lines were chaotic. Entry is free but skip the line extras and souvenirs felt overpriced. 3/5

Arrived at 7:30am and walked right in, security was quick. Entry is free but the dome climb costs extra and the views are absolutely worth it. 5/5
