Early morning on weekdays offers soft light on the pagoda and far fewer visitors; late afternoon also brings good light and cooler temperatures. Cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons are beautiful but much busier.
Budget tips
Outdoor grounds and views of the pagoda are free, while entry to the National Treasure Museum and some halls requires a small fee, typically 500–1,000 JPY. Buy the combined ticket at the temple ticket office if you plan to enter multiple buildings to save money.

- Wear comfortable shoes, paths are uneven and you will walk between halls and through Nara Park.
- Photograph the pagoda from the west approach across Nara Park, using a deer in the foreground for scale.
- Buy the combined ticket at the temple office to visit the National Treasure Museum and selected halls, that usually saves money over single tickets.
