Raske fakta: Over 40 mausoleer trenges langs en smal gate, hvert dekket av blå og turkise glaserte teglsteiner. Gravkomplekset vokste frem over 300 år og hver hersker forsøkte å overgå den forrige med sin praktfulle gravkammmer.

Høydepunkter: På toppen av trappen finnes Kusam ibn Abbas grav, en fetter av profeten Muhammed som ifølge legenden ikke døde men lever videre i underverdenen. Derfor kalles stedet "Den levende kongens grav" og man kan fortsatt se pilegrimer legge igjen små lapper med bønner ved hans mausoleum.

  • Bring a small flashlight to see the details in the darker burial chambers at the far end.
  • Photograph from the bottom of the stairs upward for the best picture of the entire alley with all the domes.
  • Dress covered over shoulders and knees, this is an active pilgrimage site and respect is expected.
  • Skip the middle of the day between 12-2 PM when the sun is directly overhead and creates flat shadows.
