Korte feiten: De collectie omvat meer dan 200 iconen en 100 liturgische voorwerpen, waarvan vele zijn gemaakt door de 16e-eeuwse schilder Onufri en zijn zoon Nikolla. Het kerkgebouw zelf, de Ontslapenis van de Heilige Maria, dateert uit 1797 en werd gebouwd binnen de muren van het kasteel van Berat.

Hoogtepunten: De iconen van Onufri verbergen een geheim in hun verf: hij mengde eiwitten met een zeldzaam rood pigment gemaakt van gemalen Armeens gesteente, en dat mengsel produceert een rood dat na bijna 500 jaar nog steeds rijkelijk gloeit. Kijk goed naar zijn "Laatste Avondmaal" en de gezichten lijken te verschuiven terwijl je beweegt, een techniek die moderne wetenschappers nooit volledig hebben kunnen nabootsen.
