Korte feiten: De wolhandel van de Patagonische estancia's gaf aanleiding tot de bouw, en een zware storm in de jaren 40 verwoestte het oorspronkelijke houten dek. De huidige replica, 125 meter lang, is opgebouwd uit lokaal lariks hout en ontvangt voetgangers sinds 2021.
Hoogtepunten: Je hoort hoe het dek ademt met de golf, omdat de balken met kleine gleuven zijn gelaten, zodat water en lucht vrij onder je voeten kunnen circuleren. Op een heldere dag lijken de witte Torres del Paine, meer dan 40 kilometer verderop, zo dichtbij dat je ze bijna zou kunnen aanraken met een uitgestrekte hand.
Insidertips
- Bring a windproof jacket and a secured hat, as gusts from the fjord reach up to 80 km/h even on a clear day.
- Plan your photo session for the west side before sunset, when the peaks turn pink and the water becomes coppery.
- Arrive early in the morning before 9:00, when the cruise groups have not yet flooded the path.
- Do not go only to the pier, combine it with the Cerro Mirador viewpoint for a panorama over the entire bay.
